As part of our commitment to being as environmentally friendly as possible we have now installed a composting toilet on the solar farm. Previously visitors on school visits and open days were provided with a conventional portable toilet, but with an all plastic construction and chemical flushing, this was hardly an environmentally friendly facility.
We therefore made an application to the Big Lottery Fund to replace it with something more in keeping with our environmental ethics. We were delighted to find that the Big Lottery panel agreed that we had made a worthy application, and awarded us £3250.
We have now purchased a timber built composting toilet and installation is now complete thanks to work by several of the cooperative’s directors along with their families and friends, ready for use on the next of our regular schools visits.
While on site we took the opportunity to bring out the solar railway. This model railway is powered by a small solar panel and demonstrates in a lighthearted way to visiting school pupils how solar energy can be used to power transportation.
It also served to entertain the directors and their families and friends during breaks in their construction work!
